Cloud Engineering (AWS & Azure) course

Design, build and secure cloud infrastructure on both AWS and Azure, the two platforms most UK employers run.

Overview

Develop practical, job-ready competency in cloud engineering on both Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. Each week teaches a core capability, such as networking, compute, storage, identity and automation, on both platforms side by side, so you understand the concepts and can work on either. You will build with Terraform, secure and monitor what you deploy, and finish by architecting a multi-cloud solution. The content aligns with the topics covered by the AWS Solutions Architect Associate and Microsoft AZ-104 Azure Administrator certifications. Exam fees are separate and a pass cannot be guaranteed.

Syllabus

  1. Module 1

    Multi-Cloud Foundations

Cloud service and deployment models, the shared responsibility model, AWS accounts and Azure subscriptions, regions and availability zones, the consoles and command-line tools, and organising resources with AWS Organizations and Azure management groups.

  2. Module 2

    Virtual Networking

AWS VPC and Azure Virtual Network: subnets, routing, NAT, peering, security groups and network security groups, DNS, and connecting networks securely.

  3. Module 3

    Compute & Elastic Scaling

EC2 and Azure Virtual Machines, auto scaling groups and virtual machine scale sets, load balancing, availability design, and choosing the right compute option.

  4. Module 4

    Storage & Data Persistence

S3, EBS and EFS alongside Azure Blob, Files and managed disks, lifecycle policies, replication, and managed databases on both platforms.

  5. Module 5

    Identity, Access & Cloud Security

AWS IAM and Microsoft Entra ID, role-based access control, least-privilege design, multi-factor authentication, and key and secret management with KMS and Key Vault.

  6. Module 6

    Infrastructure as Code with Terraform

Writing Terraform modules, remote state and locking, separating environments, and deploying equivalent infrastructure to AWS and Azure from one codebase.

  7. Module 7

    Serverless & Managed Services

AWS Lambda and Azure Functions, event-driven design, API gateways, queues and messaging, and when managed services beat running your own.

  8. Module 8

    Monitoring, Reliability & Disaster Recovery

CloudWatch, Azure Monitor and Log Analytics, alerting, backup, cross-region recovery, Azure Site Recovery, and designing for failure.

  9. Module 9

    Governance, Cost & Multi-Cloud Strategy

Tagging, budgets and FinOps, AWS Config and service control policies, Azure Policy, avoiding lock-in, hybrid and multi-cloud patterns, and exam-readiness review.

  10. Module 10

    Production Capstone Project

Architect and provision a multi-cloud solution with secure networking, automated scaling, monitoring and a disaster-recovery plan, all defined in Terraform.
